{"id":3085,"date":"2024-10-02T08:53:50","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T00:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ems.cohesionfreight.com.hk:8080\/wordpress\/?p=3085"},"modified":"2024-10-02T08:53:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T00:53:50","slug":"ilas-daggett-promises-dockworkers-great-contract-as-strike-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ems.cohesionfreight.com.hk:8080\/wordpress\/ilas-daggett-promises-dockworkers-great-contract-as-strike-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"ILA\u2019s Daggett promises dockworkers \u2018great contract\u2019 as strike begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ELIZABETH, NJ \u2014 The head of the International Longshoremen\u2019s Association (ILA) in the early hours of Tuesday pledged he would secure a \u201cgreat contract\u201d that he would like to complete by the end of the month, just hours after hundreds of union dockworkers at US East and Gulf coast ports went on strike at midnight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s one week, two \u2014 I\u2019m hoping by three it\u2019s over, I\u2019m hoping \u2014 you are making history here,\u201d ILA President Harold Daggett told the crowd, noting the significance of the union\u2019s first strike since 1977. \u201cWe are going to walk away with a great contract.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ILA rebuffed a last-minute contract extension from maritime employers that aimed to head off the strike. Daggett has said previously the ILA would neither work past the expiration of the current contract nor extend it. The union said in a statement early Tuesday morning the United States Maritime Alliance\u2019s (USMX) latest offer \u201cfell far short of what ILA rank-and-file members are demanding in wages and protections against automation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strike, which has forced the closure of all major container terminals from Maine to Texas, has scrambled the expected arrival during October of 62 container ships originally destined for ports along the East and Gulf coasts, according to Sea-web, a sister product of the Journal of Commerce within S&amp;P Global. The total capacity of those vessels is approximately 485,725 TEUs.<\/p>\n<p>Ships are already planning to discharge cargo at non-affected ports. Hapag-Lloyd said Monday that vessels in its Caribbean Express Service that would have called the Port of Virginia this week now plan to call Canada\u2019s Port of Saint John.
